The Zombie Apocalypse hits your neighborhood

You can’t go wrong with zombies – that’s what the developers at Digital Chocolate must have thought when they came up with yet another farm-and-build browser game like so many others. With zombies.

The rotten undead invaded your peaceful neighborhood and demolished houses and clean white fences. There’s no sign of survivors so far, except for Rob the Robo-Cop who supplies you with a tutorial to the game’s mechanics. Your primary goal: survive! Your secondary goals: Kill all kinds of zombies with self-crafted weapons, harvest fruits and vegetables, expand your house so your spouse can return to a save and nice home. While doing so, you’ll gain experience points, trading items, new weapons and coins to spend on stuff, like customizing your alter ego, house and doggy. The collecting aspect of the game and the many missions make it quite addicting – too bad the game forces you to stop playing (or spend real money) once you run out of energy, since it will only recharge after several minutes. It doesn’t forget about the social aspect either: You may add friends to your neighborhood to visit their homes, hire them for zombie-fighting or send them gifts.

Zombie Lane is presented in a vivid comic look, making the scary zombies appear funny and the game playable for every audience. The soundtrack plays throughout your whole gaming session, but you can turn it off with just one click once the tune gets annoying. The sound effects are nice and fit good in the overall gameplay. The controls on the other hand don’t work so smooth. Every action in this game is done via mouse clicking: Smacking zombies with the shovel, moving around, harvesting crops or picking up trash cans. That gives you some minor issues soon, as you will often accidentally attack a fierce zombie or remove rubble while you only want to walk around or move the camera.

Conclusion

Zombie Lane gets in line with other typical simulation browser games like the prototype Farmville. The zombies add up a little nerdy extra to the familiar gameplay, but overall it’s just another simulation browser game. With zombies.
